although i'm sure i'll be fine with these - don't be shy and post up more as you come up with them! 

unfortunately, though, the continuously reading file / have a daemon ideas aren't good for my particular situation, as this check runs every 5 mins from Hobbit (a monitoring tool, sorta like BigBrother)

this is good stuff, though :)
