Perlmonks as feedback medium for perl videos?

Hi

At the moment I'm fixing the last YAPC-EU Frankfurt 2012 videos on youtube which lost sound during upload.

Now I'm pondering about disabling the comment function on youtube and linking to a new monastery thread for each video. (or subthread)

The idea is to have a compact cross linking between medias and better promotion.

Additionally youtube isn't the only possibility to provide videos, we still have the server from uni Frankfurt and I suppose shadowcat is also mirroring them.

So a monastery thread could be included in a frame from a dedicated page embedding the video.

(The only downside I see is that we have no mail-forwarding like youtube has...)

What do you think?

No, I don't mind other video servers and others might find it better to have a non-YouTube alternative. For example, the dimwit CIO at my company has forbidden all YouTube links, so the likelihood of listening to perl broadcasts actually goes up for me if hosted from other servers, e.g., Vimeo.

Yes, I think linking PM threads to off-site videos is a good experiment. It is a nice step-out for a mashup of PM with other on-line sources.

By mail forwarding, do you mean notification of comments on a thread? That is, something beyond the chatterbox notifications you get when you have replies to a post? (Hey, is there an anonymous mail drop where we can see responses to anonymous posts? It would be a hoot to see all the responses to all the posts that I don't remember writing.)

If this gets implemented, I think a start page ala SOPW/Meditations to aggregate all the video-threads ought to be included

Yeah I already thought about this, but I think this could be delayed till we see traffic and acceptance.

Moving threads from SOPW to a new area afterwards shouldn't be a great deal.

If the posts contain text from the presentation and/or are formatted for PerlMonks (vs. simply a title, link and summary) then I think it would be a good, no fuss, edition. I don't think there needs to be a new section for videos. You're simply posting a Meditation or Tutorial proposal that has a visual aid.

There are a few Perl themed channels on Vimeo including one for YAPC. It might be worth approaching the moderators for those channels in addition to (my preference would be instead of) the YouTube upload. Looking at the channels, most of them haven't been updated in a few years so new content might be appreciated :-)

In the case of Vimeo, and if the posts were made here like what I described, I don't think turning comments off there would be necessary. While it may seem like that would fragment the discussion, people going to Vimeo will more likely comment on specifics in the video I would think. Even if there were fragmentation, it's not likely to get out of control it possibly could if you did enabled comments on YouTube and have a thread here.

Every talk has a detailed page in act where the speakers are free to add more information and links to their slides, even long after the event.

I don't intend to duplicate too many static meta informations across different sites.

Already uploading to youtube takes much efforts, and I'm currently trying to automate this via yt-API just to be able to add "simply a title, links and summary" and tags.

The moderators of other channels on vimeo (or whatever) are of course free to upload our videos (see licence)

And everybody is welcome to provide me with automation scripts using vimeo's (or any other plattform's) API to do this.

I think it would be good to link to the perlmonks thread in the video description and back to the video in the perlmonks thread, however closing the comments on youtube would probably only reduce interaction. Also keep in mind that your videos haven't been broadly public for long now. :)
