Damian Conway will give a talk on the current state of Perl 6 on Feb 17 at the WEHI (Parkville). Everyone is welcome, no registration required.

Tuesday 17 February, 11am
WEHI Lecture Theater
(http://www.wehi.edu.au/about/locations.html)
Parkville

Prof Damian Conway
School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Monash University.

Title: The Perl 6 Programming Language

Abstract: Perl 6 will be a major improvement on Perl 5 in many ways: syntactically, semantically, psychologically, and performance-wise. This talk looks at what is known, surmised, guessed, wished for, and dreaded about Perl 6. It discusses the history, motivations, syntax, semantics, and likely idioms of the new Perl.

To all those that attend, be sure to prod Damian about Perl6::Rules!

No prodding needed. Last month the Perl Foundation generously offered me a small grant to complete it. It's now around 75% implemented and will be finished and on the CPAN by April.

I'll probably demo it during the talk.

I want to thank Damian for the Perl 6 talk. That was excellent. :-) Too bad I attended the seminar an hour late because of production issues at work. But luckily I didn't miss too much I think. :-)

Damian's presentation was very clear and concise, I enjoyed listening to him very much.

After seen what Perl 6 can do, my overall attitude about Perl 6 has changed a bit. I have turned from a non-believer of Perl 6 to someone who's eager to get his hands on it.

That I did. I downloaded parrot (with incomplete Perl 6 language parser) after getting back to work, and started to play with it a bit. I think it's not a bad idea afterall, especially if I could use the JIT of parrot to compile Perl 6 into native machine code (I am doing research on this at the moment), or just write a stub that has parrot attached with compiled pbc's (Parrot Byte Codes). I always wanted a true Perl compiler, and Perl 6 + Parrot seems to give the answer.

Yeah, that was me. I have a feeling that I knew you back in Melbourne Uni? :-)

Cool, that's just 10 minutes away from where I am. I will definitely attend. :-)

I learned a new cool phrase from this post, from the WEHI logo.

Fiat Lux....Let there be light. Fiat Lux

Let there be Perl6 before I get too old to care anymore. :-)
