I reproduced this issue on
perl 5, version 14, subversion 2 (v5.14.2) built for x86_64-linux-gnu-thread-multi

So it seems like this must have broken after the book was written. Sounds like a bug to me.

             I hope life isn't a big joke, because I don't get it.
