I just received this message in the Chatterbox:
You said "Reaped node at: [id://630189] because [[chacham]]: offtopic" to root
So it correctly notified root, but maybe that’s just because in this case the OP was Anonymous Monk, who can’t be messaged. Anyway, that’s how it displayed in the Chatterbox, but in my Message Inbox, the links work correctly:
told root Reaped node at: Reaped: Re: When I count, I think of numbers as... because chacham: offtopic
“Curiouser and curiouser!” cried Alice.

Thanks for this follow-up information.
I didn't think to specify the location of the message when I originally posted: it was the Chatterbox.
It didn't occur to me to check in my Message Inbox (probably because I hadn't actually sent the message),
so I've no idea whether links were rendered correctly there.
I can report that the notification of your reply (the one I'm now responding to) appears in both the Chatterbox and Message Inbox and all links look fine, i.e. no instances of [id://nnnnnn] or [[xxxxxx]].
Hopefully, that narrows down the issue for whoever is looking into it.

Fair enough.
As stated, it was "just a guess": the only thing I could see (from this year) that was related to reaped nodes.
On a completely different note, another thing I saw there was Ascension: congratulations on that.

Another instance of this just occurred.
As before, I selected "reap" and this appeared in the Chatterbox (verbatim):
You said "I've reaped your node [id://1150733]. Reason: [[hippo]]: Abusive " to ralph2014
I checked in Message Inbox (which I hadn't thought to do when this first happened) and, constraining to:
Showing messages [X]From [ ]To kcott
([ ]not) in folders [ ]Inbox () [ ]Archive (162) [X]Deleted (1)
constrain by content: [ ]
and/or by user [ ]
I see one message (again, verbatim):
told root Reaped node at: Reaped: Re^12: threads, forks and SSH because [hippo]: Abusive
Is anyone looking into this?
If so, is this additional information useful?
Would any other information be helpful?

1. Whatever code that generates the [[stevieb]] part, was probably intended to generate a link to the monk who initially posted the consideration
[...]
3. Update: Whatever code that generates the [id://1149099] part, was probably intended to generate a link also.
then
I see one message (again, verbatim):
told root Reaped node at: Reaped: Re^12: threads, forks and SSH because [hippo]: Abusive
And, as you can now see, they both did.
2. While I was one of the monks who considered this for reaping (and I don't really have any problem being identified as such), I didn't actually reap the node. Perhaps the message should, more accurately, identify NodeReaper as the one doing the reaping.
root is not fooled into thinking that you were solely responsible for the reaping.
I selected "reap" and this appeared in the Chatterbox (verbatim):
You said "I've reaped your node [id://1150733]. Reason: [[hippo]]: Abusive " to ralph2014
Back to (1) and (3) above, this message is meant to show you what you typed. But it would probably be better to show you how what you typed will look (modulo a couple of rendering details that can vary between viewing users).
The bigger problem is that it says that the message was sent to the node's author. As you discovered, a message from you was sent to root. The message that was sent to the author was sent from NodeReaper.
So I see two problems that it would be nice for someone from pmdev to look into. The second problem could be addressed by changing the order in which the messages are sent so that you'd be shown the one sent to root from you. Perhaps a slightly better (but less trivial) fix would be to change the "You" to "NodeReaper". Or perhaps the best fix (another simple one) would be to not notify you of either message (and just document these messages in an appropriate place).

Thanks for your response and analysis of the problem (with potential fixes).
It looks like nothing further is needed from me; however, if anyone from pmdev does need more information, just ask.
