MacOS - yes, I'm in a minority ;) but then again my Mac *could* run Windows, Linux, *BSD, NeXTSTEP, BeOS, etc, etc, etc... How about "The computer I most use Perl on runs..."?

the computer I use the most runs 'wet-ware'. mitd
Win2000Pro, but I'm "gaggin' fer the day" when I can ingest a caplet containing cerebro-seeking nanites that offer me wireless broadband access to global information devices.

Even though the majority of people in this poll specified they used some UNIX variant (Whether it be BSD or Linux or whatever). I bet the statistics for this site will prove the opposite. Hey Tim! Care to tell us what *Really* is used by the people who visit perlmonks.org? ..and yes I use Linux :)
Right now we aren't keeping those statistics but maybe I'll track it for a day or so just for fun and let you know. I'm not sure that I want to find out the people who visit the site are all liars... might have to change the name of the site and register a new domain... then again maybe people just surf the web on their Windoze boxes and spend most of their time developing on another OS.
I based my thoughts on some previous discussions/polls seen on slashdot.org. People there usually voted they used Linux, but at one time, one of the editors (Rob?) said Windows was the most popular platform for visiting the site. I'm sure there are logical reasons behind this (Like e.g. the first poster said here he used NT at work)

Hrrrm. What about multi-boot machines? My most-used box now has 4 OSen on it.

Yeah I know this is a seven year old post but something yanked my chain so I wanted to comment on this question.

"The computer I use most runs?" is a plain and clear question. So your computer has 4 OSes on the HD, Well which one do you boot it with the most? Do you use Windoze at work? I will speculate that your work usage far exceeds your home usage unless you don't have a Wife/Husband/BF/GF/Kids/Life.

It has also always struck me that IS/IT pros that really are *nix users almost always are actually fair to good competent with Windoze admin but the reverse is of course rarely true

You don't sound cool to me (or thousands of others like me) when you tell me that "I'm a Linux User" but it is obvious from what you say and how you work that you think in windows terms. We know both, and we can tell. You sound like a person that sets their self identity on what OS you use - and that is lameness personified. It is forgivable if you are a kid, but if you are over 25 or so you might want to seek psychiatric help.

    ifconfig vr0 10.0.0.1 NETMASK ff.ff.ff.0

Do you know what the above does? Is there a mistake in it? no clue? You probably aren't a *nix user if you don't know. This doesn't mean you have to know everything - I don't really know crap about emacs, but I do know vi.

    geest > tee -ai foo.bar > ..\bar.foo

Do you know what the above does? It isn't anything complicated at all but it is a very *nix thought. This isn't about deciphering obfuscated command lines, this is about knowing the commands that make up the *Nix Userland.

I couldn't care less what OS people use. I have friends, family, and friends of family ask me computer questions all the time and I have recommended Macs, Win*(Never ME), and Solaris/FreeBSD on many occasions. Why? Because dance shoes are not very useful for hunting, and insulated water proof boots are a mis-specification for a desert hike.

So... What do I use? I use a Mac OS X laptop with an account each for me, my job, and my 2nd job. I bought the mac because I needed MS-Off. for communication with my employers and a unix terminal for the actual work. My other specs were 12" screen (small), light weight (4.9#), and long battery life (5+ hours just typing).

My second most used machine is a FreeBSD desktop running blackbox, terminals, OpenOffice, FireFox and not much else. The 3rd is my Windows station at work. 4th and 5th are HP-UX and Solaris. These are where I do my work, my login, my desktop. Lots of code that I write ends up running on Linux (mostly RH and Deb) but I wouldn't say I work on those except for some testing at the CLI

Don't lie about what OS you are using because you think it makes you look cool. That is very very lame -- the only people you fool are the ones that can't help you.

The computer under my desk is NT, but it's just a $3000 telnet client to a Solaris machine.
