&lt;p&gt;IMHO the only sane way to deal with NULL/undef values is not to allow them by default, and if they are present, force explicit handling of them.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Unfortunately the only language I know that gets this right is Haskell (which has its own share of problem).
