My full name is Yitzchak Scott-Thoennes; the Thoennes was mine from birth, and the Scott from my wife. Hyphenating was a last resort after we failed to pick a completely new name to share; she just wouldn't go for "Baggins". Amusingly, just a few generations back, my paternal ancestor was named Brown but adopted into a Thoennes family, while my wife's paternal ancestors were named Shwartz or some such but changed to sound more English after immigrating to England.
