&lt;p&gt;It's worth noting that these are &lt;strike&gt;&lt;em&gt;retronyms&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strike&gt; &lt;em&gt;backronyms&lt;/em&gt;. That is, they were coined after Perl was already named. I'm sure you already knew that, but some readers of this thread might not.&lt;/p&gt;
