&lt;p&gt;Alternatively you might check &lt;tt&gt;time()&lt;/tt&gt; inside your process and finish it off gracefully by its own controls when it has aged that &lt;i&gt;pre-defined amount of time&lt;/i&gt;, saving you the hassle of using signals from outside.&lt;/p&gt;
