[http://www.dotnetperls.com/reserved-filenames|Several] [wp://Filename|resources] suggest that &lt;c&gt;NUL&lt;/c&gt; is a reserved file name, not &lt;c&gt;NIL&lt;/c&gt;. I don't have a windows at hand to test it, but I'd guess it's actually NUL that is equivalent to UNIX' /dev/null.
