You know you're a geek when...

by defyance (Curate)
on Feb 18, 2002 at 18:16 UTC ( #146192=CUFP: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

You propose to your girlfriend with a script!! I know its corny, but she loved it! She's learning Linux, and some programming stuff, so I thought it would be cute. I had her run it in front of our friends. I'm a new daddy and now I'm getting married in August! Wooo Hooo!!

BTW: I didn't use strict cause I was in a hurry and left it out. Bad Practice, I know I know..
#!/usr/bin/perl -wT sub love { local ( $first, $last ) = @_; print "\nWill You Marry Me, $first $last ??\n"; chomp( $love = <STDIN> ); if ( $love =~ /yes/ ) { &yes } else { print "Error no 1 Kernel Failure Shutting Down\n" } } sub yes { print "\nGood!! I couldn't live without you!!\n\n"; print " **** **** ******* ******* *************** ************* ********* ***** * \n"; } my $a = Danyeal; my $b = Waddell; &love( $a, $b );

    o'course, with no "use strict", you could have a second child unexpectedly... :)
      You are so right!
      Perl Contraceptives make life easier, thats for sure!

      I think next time we will consider using the BirthControl::Depo::Prevara module for added security.

    Good thing she didn't type: Yes. That would have been awkward :). Good geeks always use lower case though, you have yourself a keeper.
      *chuckle* or what if she had typed:
      "Sorry, I just accepted another proposal yesterday..."

      But seriously, congratulations.

A *real* geek...

    A *true* Perl geek would have golfed that script first. :) Congrats.
      Or better yet....obfu'd it.

      perl -e 'print reverse qw/o b n a e s/;'

    Guess it is possible for a geek to hear something other than:
    sub getDateResponce { return(0); }

    Congratulations. :)

      Yes it is possible :)

      what about the infamous

      sub react2RejectionResponse { die "Kernel Failure"; }

    Awfully cocky, using a "my" declaration on her name, when she hadn't even said "yes" yet...

      She did say yes.. :) August 10th 2002

        Guess you better start cleaning out your browser bookmark files eh? :) And maybe scope the session management / persistence needs for the marriage.

        (And buy her her own library of Perl books so she'll leave yours where you piled 'em.)

        Well done defyance!

[Tanktalus]: Tux: use sort -V to sort your perls. Looks much nicer that way ;)
[Tux]: Hmmm, pm-cb-g does not seem to accept dead-key diacriticals as all my other (perl) applications do. choroba?
[Tux]: Tanktalus this was the output of autocompletion in my tcsh
[erix]: ah, but I have different compilation- versions of Pg too, so double that: 26 * 2 = more than 50 :P
[Tanktalus]: When I showed one of my coworkers my perl list, he told me that my sort routine was broken when 5.8.8 showed up after 5.26.0 ... which made me investigate sort, which is when I found this option :)
erix atm running billion row table replication (pg-)tests...
[Tanktalus]: Tux: ah, still... :)
Tux writes mail to tcsh developers ...
Tanktalus snickers :)
[stonecolddevin]: good morning everyone
