Some Points about KeyWords

I don't know if many of you have thought about the new keyword functionality recently added to the site. I replied to vroom's node announcing it, but everybody seems to be ignoring the whole issue.

I think that if this facility is to be useful, then we need better guidelines about the keywords to add. I think a list of standard keywords, with hints as to when each of them might be appropriate would be useful.

As I said in my original reply:

Have we considered a "standard list" of keywords? If we had this it would make it easier to classify the nodes and also help make the words added by various users more consistent. Uniformity will help when it comes to searching.

Also there does not seem to be a faciltiy to edit or delete keywords from a node. I think that's definitly something that should be considered. For instance if I make a spelling mistake and add the keyword seraching to a node, then the only option at the moment is to also add the correct spelling searching. It would be nice to be able to edit mistakes or remove redundant keywords

Possible Solutions:

  • Let monks edit the key words they added
  • Make general editing facilties available to high level monks
  • Create a group similar to the documentation group with edit privlidges

If a group with edit privlidges is created, then a means of communicating problems to them, similar to requests to the editor, would be necessary. It would be possible to just make this a function of the current editor requests page, but that would place a lot more work on vroom and that's probably not a good thing.

I think that this new facility could be really useful, but only if it's done properly.

This is still an excellent idea. It was really discussed in more detail at the node Editing the keywords entered for a node, but the top of that node appears to be empty (?!?) At any rate, I would really like to see the keyword nodelet for Newest Nodes to be emptied out - it is more cluttered than ever. I keep that nodelet at the top of my list to encourage myself to use it more, but it's hard when it fills up with junk so often. Just wanted to bring this issue back up...
