If you are sorting on values, do you mean something like this?

sub groupsOf (&$@);

    my $rcDoIt;
    $rcDoIt = sub
       {

              map shift, 1 .. ( @_ < $groupsOf ? @_ : $groupsOf )
              ),
           @_ ? &$rcDoIt : ();
       };

    &$rcDoIt;
}
