Gotta say it... I just had a taste of what a post apocalyptic world would look like. The Frankenstorm Sandy hit the New Jersey Shore and wreaked havoc and chaos on the area. I was one of the lucky ones given that I had no damage to my property. We lost lights the first night of the storm and were lucky again when we got power back three days later. On one hand the empty shelves in the stores with people buying everything in sight whether or not they needed it (a 72 inch plasma TV? REALLY???), the long lines at gas stations so folks could run their generators, other miscreants cruising neighborhoods listening for the tell tale sound of a generator running and stealing them. On the other hand the folks that came together to help each other out sharing what they had with one another out of their own need. If Frankenstorm wasn't enough a Nor'easter came through a week later bringing more havoc, destruction and power outages on a weary population. Again there were heroes and zeros either helping each other or in the case of the zeros looking out for themselves at the expense of others. My family and I got lucky again and only were without power for three days. We lost everything in our refrigerator and freezer but managed to feed ourselves and others before the stuff went bad. So, you can never tell what you'll miss when the apocalypse comes. (Notice I say when not if!) I found it was the simple pleasures. Taking a shower and not freezing my butt off when I stepped out. Being able to read past 5PM in the evening. I did miss the technology but found I could function very nicely without it. Stepping off my soapbox now..... Peter L.
