One answer would be to use the API provided by Google for interfacing with their systems.Automating searches the way you are attempting to is prohibited by the terms and conditions of use.

FWIW, the terms have been updated http://www.google.co.in/intl/en/policies/terms/archive/20070416-20120301/

IMHO it is stupid to use Mechanize for this, to avoid google modules like WWW::Google::CustomSearch
