If the ".pdf" suffix is associated with Adobe, you can simply pass the file name to "system", and it will do the right thing. This works for me (Windows7):

perl -e "system q|myfile.pdf|"

             Most people believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
        Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.
