What is all this extra cruft? Is this due to something about our re-writing sub-routine? Or a typical result in a DBM file? Or something else?

Why examine the insides of obscure binary file format, without learning something about obscure binary file format?

http://perldoc.perl.org/AnyDBM_File.html#DBM-Comparisons

http://perl5.git.perl.org/perl.git/tree?f=ext/SDBM_File

Good luck, its too obscure for my taste :)
