Does the idiom only apply to filenames? For a directory name, "0" would be not too esoteric.

    My position is that application programs should not impose restrictions that are not enforced by the OS. Full stop.

    And for portability reasons, applications should not attempt to "validate" file or pathnames. Let the OS do it and then reports its conclusions.

    Any other approach is just pointless make work; and will inevitably comes back to bite you in the ass.
