Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

hey i get this error in my script " line 621 : using a | char in open without a | at the beginning or end is usually a typo " . the problem is my code has only 450 lines

    There's a number of possibilities here; for instance, that could be line 621 of some module you've loaded.

    Please provide the message in its entirely (preferably within <code>...</code> tags).

    Also, if you're able to narrow down where in your script that is occurring, that could help in determining the cause. (Again, post that code within <code>...</code> tags).

    Can you reproduce the error in ten lines of code? (Doing so will probably take some work, and that process will probably lead you to discovering what the problem is.)

    I Guess you will be using open() function call in your code with | character.

    I will be better you can post the code to further checkup.

    probably line 621 of a module you are using.

    “... is usually a typo” is your number-one clue here.   Did you, say, omit a quote-mark in a string a few lines back?   Did you typo something?   Look extremely carefully at the source-code in the immediate vicinity.   The author of that message is trying to tell you that it is probably a red-herring.
