Of course, I use Ubunty LTS for production now...

Yeah, me too. I got Slackware 1.0, way back when. It came with an "experimental" X server, which you had to labourously manually configure, but it did have a solid PPP connection and text mode consoles. :-) As I recall, it was still the era of Windows 3.0, and even by then, I knew there had to be something better. :-)
