lab007 has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hello,

I am trying to install Device::USB on CentOS 6. I have installed Perl 5.16.0 using Perlbrew (also tried with Perl 5.18.2). Gcc & make are installed and in the path as well, of course.

Here is the error from trying to install Device::USB
cpan -i Device::USB <snip...> make[1]: Entering directory `/root/.cpan/build/Inline-0.54-lWJF7c/C' PERL_DL_NONLAZY=1 /root/perl5/perlbrew/perls/perl-5.16.0/bin/perl "-ME +xtUtils::Command::MM" "-e" "test_harness(0, '../blib/lib', '../blib/a +rch')" t/*.t t/00init.t .............. ok t/01syntax.t ............ ok t/02config.t ............ ok t/03typemap.t ........... ok t/04perlapi.t ........... ok t/05xsmode.t ............ ok t/06parseregexp.t ....... ok t/07typemap_multi.t ..... ok t/08taint.t ............. 1/10 sh: make: No such file or directory A problem was encountered while attempting to compile and install your + Inline C code. Here are the o conf entries for make:
make [/usr/bin/make] make_arg [] make_install_arg [] make_install_make_command [/usr/bin/make]

I have tried installing this module on three different CentOS 6 machines, same issue on all of them! I am at a loss - but I really need to get Device::USB working somehow.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!

    its simple, force install ... its only one test failing
      Ok, I just tried that. Did not work. USB.pm did not get installed, and when I run "cpan Device::USB", I get a ton of error messages - here are the first few lines:
      USB.xs:6:17: error: usb.h: No such file or directory USB.xs: In function 'libusb_get_busses': USB.xs:32: warning: return makes pointer from integer without a cast USB.xs: In function 'libusb_open': USB.xs:37: warning: return makes pointer from integer without a cast USB.xs: In function 'libusb_close': USB.xs:42: error: 'usb_dev_handle' undeclared (first use in this funct +ion)

      It seems the reason for the error needs to be addressed instead of suppressed.

      What could be causing the failure to install? How to make it install w/o using force?
