in reply to In base 1, the number after 0 is:

A Thumb!

I checked it: zero was a fist; 110 was a thumb; 210 was a thumb and forefinger; ...

Unfortunately, the options:

  • Thumb
  • Other
  • None of the above

were all missing, so I wasn't able to vote in this poll. :-(

Deaf people have improved this slightly :-)

They consider a hand with only the thumb extended to mean "6", while the index finger means "1". Zero is signed by forming a round shape using the thumb and index finger. This way they can sign the numbers 0 .. 9 using one hand only.

How do they do 5? Did you mean 5 when you typed 6?

"5" is your hand with all fingers extended, "9" is all fingers except the pinky extended.

        "10" is signed "1" then "0".

You could always repurpose -0. It's not like it means something specific anyway. :)

[oiskuu]: Don't you think it's disturbing that the washing machine manual would say not to start it with pets inside?
[oiskuu]: So, how long did it take you to grow up?
[oiskuu]: Have you ever had your temperature taken from the other end?
[marto]: I read about a case where people were at a launderette, or whatever they're called in the US, and as a joke, put their toddler in with the washing, then closed the door

[ambrus]: oiskuu: definitely not silly. have you ever tried to remove cat hair or dog hair from clothes? for many clothes, it's pretty hard, and running the washing machine with a cat inside would get the hair on everything.
[oiskuu]: YM, I'm interested in your questions... maybe start a a thread at polls.
[oiskuu]: marto, it ended badly? I doubt the power is easy to plug at those installations?
