What is the Name of your "XML file"?
is /html a File, or a Directory?
Could this ambiguity be the problem?

It has nothing to do with filehandles. I get the same result when I provide a literal string to load_xml. `s$$([},&%#}/&/]+}%&{});#$&&s&&$^X.($'^"%]=\&(\|?{%` `+`.+=%;.#_}\&"^"-+%*).}%:##%}={~=~:.")&e&&s""`$''`"e	[reply] [d/l] [select]
