Some events are announced here (in Perl News, as has been pointed out) because somebody felt strongly enough about the event to announce it, and remembered good ol' perlmonks.

I cannot remember a single instance about somebody complaining about a perl event being announced on perlmonks, so my advice would be "do it".

If, one day, we have the problem of having too many announcements on perlmonks, I suggest we start the discussion again. Until then, don't hold back.
