    The Anonymous Monk is probably overwhelmed by the number of search results. He seeks our opinions to narrow his choice.

    I still recommend either the book "Learning Perl" or "Learning Perl on Win32 Systems". I admit that both are out-of-date. This is not a problem because he can learn the new features later.
