Important Nodes? (change request / suggestion)

People say you have your best ideas in the shower.

Well, I was in the shower this morning (don't titter), and I had an idea. I doubt very much it's my best. But it's an idea, and it's about PerlMonks.

As much as I try not to post in the vein of "Hey-why-don't-we-make-Vroom-do-some-more-work-to-make-our-visits-to-PM-easier", I'm am doing so now. I was thinking about the different types of posts we have here at our beloved monastery, and very basically categorised thus :

Do's & Dont's

Other

Now, let's start at the end. To me, Other encompasses various submissions - Questions, Code, Ob-fus, Discussions, Meditations, Poetry etc. But there are a large amount of important posts that often get frontpaged for their value, and are then banished to the obscurity of the Old Node Wastelands. No prizes for guessing they are filed in the Do's & Don'ts category.

The title of the category is self-explanatory, but is not necessarily a set-in-stone criteria. Nodes I feel that belong are the Newbie Help/Pointers, The Calls for Tolerance wrt Voting, The Style Suggestions in Posting, Before You Ask... Pointers, etc etc. To wit, the non-perl guidelines we all know and love (to write about).

So what I was wondering is, are there any edb developers out there who might like to put some code forward that would facilitate an area for all of this? I'm thinking of an area of PerlMonks that would serve in the same manner as Best Nodes / Worst Nodes, perhaps it could be called Important Nodes? The ultimate say of what goes into this area and what doesn't could be bestowed upon the editors, and PerlMonks could suggest nodes to be added via a Nodes to Consider type interface. 5 votes for, and the ultimate vote from a editor, and it's in. This would also stop the many duplications of discussions like "Why Don't We Set up a Newbie area?" and "Thoughts on Voting" etc. They are all worthy of posting, which is why they should be whacked into Important Nodes for all users (new & current) to view.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this, but I'd be most interested to see some code suggestions / work done. I'm not an edb developer, but I'm on-call 24 hours a day for research, help, a loving word, and perhaps fashion tips. Because hey, my name is azatoth, and I love PerlMonks.

Chances very slim, i think, but for what it's worth i agree. I've often wished for a place where the relatively small number of Official Right Answers and other Good Points were easily accessible. Sometimes it seems that the most useful thing one can work on here is a mental map of the really good stuff, for later reference. My personal nodelet overfloweth.

If corroboration were needed, consider this anonymous backwater node from dominus.

But i don't think it has to be a toiling-vroom sort of job, and i don't quite agree with your nomination mechanism: too, er, democratic. What's really needed for something like this is a waspish but essentially benevolent curator. It would be a good external project, like the stats, perhaps with a simple submission queue and categorisation system, but really designed for newsgroup/email/perl distribution.

The name 'apocrypha' comes to mind, for some reason.

I'd offer but this sort of job takes gravitas, not to mention a thick skin, and i lack both.

    Ok-

People say you have your best ideas in the shower.

I have noticed this comment ever since I have been at the Monastery, and find it funny that many ideas seem to come from within the shower. *Still.*

I doubt very much it's my best. But it's an idea, and it's about PerlMonks.

Note: Just because one may have an idea related to the Monastery, doesn't mean it needs to be said (as I have learned in times past.)

As much as I try not to post in the vein of "Hey-why-don't-we-make-Vroom-do-some-more-work-to-make-our-visits-to-PM-easier", I'm am doing so now.
Especially the part: I'm am doing so now.

First of all, I'm not sure if Vroom is really up to adding every new page idea within the past existence of the Monastery, (not that this is a bad idea persay,) but also, what does " I'm am " mean? ;-)

To me, Other encompasses various submissions - Questions, Code, Ob-fus, Discussions, Meditations, Poetry etc.

I may be wrong, but aren't these catagories, already just that, catagories in existence currently?

But there are a large amount of important posts that often get frontpaged for their value, and are then banished to the obscurity of the Old Node Wastelands.

I understand what you are getting at here, but I would think it would be easier for one to point another person in the direction of the powerful Super Search rather than create a section for the "Old Node Wastelands".

No prizes for guessing they are filed in the Do's & Don'ts category.

    Funny, I wanted some prizes.

Overall, I think this is a good brainstorm, but it has already been discussed in past nodes, at least bits and pieces have been discussed ... and it hasn't been developed yet. I really don't think that these type of new sections are really necessary for the Monastery, because if a newbie really wants to learn, they should do it the way that every other one of us here has done it. By the help of other, wiser monks, that spend time answering worthwhile questions.

Because hey, my name is azatoth, and I love PerlMonks.

Hmm, is this a rationale for this whole idea?

Anyways, that's just my $0.05 on this idea. Take it with a grain of salt. I think that tye had a good reply on this idea.

    Andy Summers

Thanks for your reply, bladx. Few remarks :

I may be wrong, but aren't these catagories, already just that, catagories in existence currently?

Yes, they are. I was trying to explain how I personally divided the content of the Monastery into two main categories.

I understand what you are getting at here, but I would think it would be easier for one to point another person in the direction of the powerful Super Search rather than create a section for the "Old Node Wastelands".

I think you misunderstood my inference here - I wasn't suggesting an area called Old Node Wastelands, I was commenting on how many important nodes are sucked up by time, and only revealed to newer users by the grey-haired sages of the monastery.

Hmm, is this a rationale for this whole idea?

      Sure, why not.

Thanks for your input, but when reading my posts in future, don't take me too literally. Sometimes I have a way with words that shouldn't be taken at face value :)
