See dump. I think it was deemed not worth the effort to maintain that approach, so it might or might not work for you.

Also see various serializers such as Sereal, Storable or DBD::SQLite for storing or caching data.

In that vein, <shameless plug>Tie::Hash::DBD</shameless plug>, which works great with DBD::SQLite.
