As much as I loathe how self-centered some Americans can be, and how they tend to ignore anything not American, I think you are greatly mistaken if you think the issues raised in this post are not relevant to other countries. Much of the stuff we use, tools, programs, web sites, mailing lists, are US based. American policies have an influence on the computing world at large. For example, crypto export restrictions had the consequence that browsers in my country used 40-bit SSL encryption, known to be much easier to crack than 128-bit encryption that American users could enjoy. We live in a global world, few things that happen in the US fail to affect the rest of us.
