“Dunno, Grandfather ...”   It sure seems to me that “the OP just can’t see the forest for the trees!”

“The initial gathering of command-line parameters,” no matter how exactly you do it, is, at best, a purely-superficial and largely-irrelevant(!) concern.   At this point, really, you just want to manage to gather everything ... and to successfully leverage an existing piece of software to do the dirty work.   And, “if you are thinking too much about this, at this point, then ... you are thinking too much.”

Forget about bitmasks and whatever-else ... just drag yourself to the side of the pool, climb out, and go grab yourself a beer.   If you stare too much and too long at “bits and bytes and bitmasks,” you can easily spend far too much time frittering about things that very simply do not matter.   “Step one is simply to recognize what the user has actually entered.”   And, this “step one” is where all of these libraries end.   As I said earlier, your actual concerns are, entirely(!), “thereafter.”

Not replying to the user you address. Meaningless blerb. Ridiculous formatting. Quoting no-one. Do you have dementia?
