this project is also a way for me to learn how to improve my web development and coding skills for large projects in general That is a good goal and developing something at home is the right approach. But it's all the more reason to use something that has on-going development and support, and which you could well encounter in the real world in either a job opportunity or a community project to join.
The way forward always starts with a minimal test.
