Well, if you flat out refuse to use 'split' or 'basename' as mentioned in the replies above, you could use this.

my $title= '/Text_Files/Cake_Rec.txt'; ($title) = ($title =~ m|([^/]*)\.|); $title =~ tr/_/ /; print $title;
