Side-effects of the Server Move

by dws (Chancellor)
on Jan 31, 2002 at 00:48 UTC ( #142331=monkdiscuss: print w/ replies, xml ) Need Help??

Have you noticed any side-effects from the server migration? (Aside from difference in performance.)

Here's one:

At this moment, Best nodes contains several new user homenodes, with 0 votes. You can't vote on a homenode, but if nobody else is getting votes, zero is enough to get them onto the list!

hey, there goes another! Good job, tilly.

The "Add daily XP ration" function is not enabled .. hence no one can wote on anything. This most likely puts less load on the database -- in fact, it means the database can be left in "read-only" mode.

Probably very convenient until the move is ironed out.

If the database is in read-only mode, how are all these new nodes being posted? :D

Wouldn't know if this is a server-move issue or perhaps a change in the Voting/Experience System, but after logging in today, I noticed that I had 5 votes available instead of 20. No biggie, though -- I'm sure there's much more important things to be attended to first :)

Update 1/31. Back to 20 votes. You guys are amazing :)

I notice one small difference, which was confusing me when writing a reference to a node.
Previously, we had our addresses as
    index.pl?node_id=xxxxxx&lastnode_id=yyyyyy
    Now, the addresses look like
    index.pl?lastnode_id=yyyyyy&node_id=xxxxxx
I have to be careful when I want to quote a node.

    update
Just to clarify. When I quote a node, I always use the [id://xxxx] notation. I wanted to say that the addresses I look at to get such number are changed. It's just a visual change for the human reader. My browser is happy enough :)

BTW, this post was entered as a comment to Side-effects of the Server Move and it came out unespectedly as root node. Root in which section? Couldn't find out.

update 7-May-2002 (!) At last, now the node is under the right parent. Thanks, kudra.
    _ _ _ _ (_|| | |(_|>< _|
If you're going to quote a node, use   [id://xxxxx]
      or   [id://xxxxx|blah]
      instead of index.pl?node_id=xxxxx

In any event, the order of parameters in a URL isn't significant unless the CGI has hand-rolled their processing (i.e., they have used CGI.pm)

Well, thanks to the kind person who gave me -- on this node because my post got eaten when the server went away earlier this morning.

Here's what I tried to post: I uploaded a new picture for my home node but the result is that you see the "missing graphic" thingi instead. So it looks like this is one thing that hasn't made the transfer successfully. I'm sure it will get fixed -- I can wait -- but I thought I'd mention it.

Just two that I've noticed.... First all the timestamps seem to be shifted by 5 hours. I don't know if this is a UTC/GMT v. EST issue or not, but its quite minor.

Second, some of my personal links broke becase they pointed at '/index.pl' instead of './index.pl' or just 'index.pl' Since they don't take into consideration the new base of ~monkads/ they all broke. Again though, its just a minor point.

I know how difficult server-moves can be on an IT team. I'd just like to express my thanks to the faithful volunteers who got the job done. Well done guys!

p.s. Is it just me, or is the site noticeably faster in its new home? I've consistently gotten ping times around 10ms!!

Update: Those ping times are from my server in philadelphia, so which appears to be only a few hundred miles away from the new pelmonks servers.

I hope that this thread is still being monitored...

Both on 2002-02-01 and 2002-02-02 I have seen a condition where submitting votes by way of the vote! button returns me to the same page, without registering the votes. It may take as many as four attempts at voting on a given page before the system registers that a vote has taken place.

P.S. Was the PerlMonks.org move caused by not enough of us donating money to the cause? Should we hold a fund drive?

P.S.S. My thanks and appreciation go out to all the people that help keep this ship moving. I enjoy this community very much.

I have noticed on a few occasions that when submitting from perlmonks.org I am sent to the appropriate node_id but on www.perlmonks.org.

UPDATE: See Re: Finding unmatched brackets/braces for an example.
