Server Status/ Thank you Pair.com

Just wanted to give everyone a status update on where things stand with the new server location and what not. Hopefully all of you are beginning to see some fast pageloads again.

We transitioned from one 2 processor machine which performed double duty as a webserver and database server to a 1 processor DB server and a 1 Processor web Server. The OS also changed from Debian to FreeBSD. Some combination of those factors and possibly web server settings made things quite bad for a while. Pair was going out of their way to help us out. They took the server down and added more RAM and Hard Disk space on multiple occasions (possibly even faster processors) and were extremely responsive when we asked for anything. At least two of the people over at Pair who were helping us out are amongst our ranks. Thanks (ehdonhon and mattriff)!!!.

Over the past week I've optimized a lot of database queries and added some additional indexes as needed. Pair was also kind enough to hook us up with a second web server which went into rotation yesterday.

nate was instrumental in getting PM running at pair. He put in a lot of hours those first few days which were especially hairy.

Thanks to all the people at Pair for their help and great service. Thanks to tye,jcwren,j.a.ph.,ar0n,grinder and others for help in finding links to potentially helpful information and working on potential code speed-ups. I'm sure I missed some people but you get the idea.

Hopefully I haven't jinxed us by making this post. :)

I've noticed a huge increase in performance! Pair is the best in the business (that's why I give them my business too). I'm going over to drop a donation now!

    Thanks,

Whatever you guys tweaked sure did the trick for me! I'm getting the fastest page loads I've ever gotten. Vroom, you definitly made the right choice going w/ pair. I have been a pair customer in one way or another for 3-4 years, and have ALWAYS been impressed w/ the caliber of their folks. Their prices are quite reasonable, and the quality is awesome.

Keep up the good work guys! Thanks for giving us the monastery. Between PM and use.perl.org, I can waste all kinds of time. :-)

It's been running like a top for me lately, noticeably better than it had before the server move!

    Mission accomplished, jinx notwithstanding... :)
