There is a theory I learnt in computer science a few years back. ... You're probably referring to a general model of learning put forth by Psychologist Virginia Satir. This model describes how we're on a learning plateau, then go through a period of chaos before climbing to a new, higher plateau. Here is a short description of the Satir model, with a nifty picture.
