There will always be people with a behavior different than the majority of any community. Like for instance people who don't investigate before asking. Many times these people get 'friendly' advises like RTFM or STFW as a result and ultimately they adopt to the commonly accepted behavior.

A hint in the right direction, like a link to the FM that should be read, is a nice way of indicating what you think while still giving constructive advice. If this frustrates you, you could just ignore the post.

Our world is going in a direction where quick results is the only thing that counts. I'm fighting it at work, where high quality solutions are less requested because it takes longer to develop. "Find a quick solution that kind'a works and go on" is the code word of the day. This will of course also reflect the behavior on the Web and in foras as the Monastery. "Find a quick answer and go on even if you don't understand the problem they solved for you" is getting more and more common.

I always feel good when these visitors to the Monastery or other foras (like the Linux mailing lists) start to get interested and come back, asking questions that show a sincere interest of the underlying problem from their side.

Everything went worng, just as foreseen.
