Why not just do this?

$query = qq(SELECT * FROM users WHERE userid = \'$username\');

$sth = $dbh->prepare($query);
$sth->execute;

if(($sth->fetchrow)[0]){
  print "$userName is a valid user \n";
  exit;
}
print "$userName is an invalid user \n";
