there are cases where $@ can give the wrong impression about whether the eval was successful.

Can you give an example of that?

    Sure:

    sub DESTROY { eval "1" } eval 'my $x = bless {}; die "ouch\n"'; print "($@)\n";
    which prints "()" not "(ouch\n)".
