First off let me say i sympathize with you completely, as i am in a very similar boat (learned a lot of perl, taking c++ classes, etc), and while all the arguements about learning a low level language, or just a different one certainly are valid, i think the biggest problem is that you tend to get assignments that are more perl oriented, such as string processing and so forth, so you get to see first hand all of c++'s weaknesses (i think the state of strings in C counts as a weakness), but you never see any of the strenghts (super fast low level code).
