Perfect for me ... in fact, i have become my user name. :)

When i first joined Perl Monks, i tried to register simply jeff, but that was taken as expected. So, i then added the first initial from my last name - kept everything lower case to ease typing and violin! (sic)

Since then, i have used that nick about everywhere i go, (except when i am not not my outrageous alter-ego - captvanhalen). Can't remember who said it here ... but a while back someone thought that my nick was pronounced héfé because of my association with eduardo. My nick is pronounced simply jeff - a. But you can call me whatever you feel is appropriate at the time. ;)

    except you, belg4mit ;)

People who would like to find out more about what Perlmonks users nicks mean can consult a definitive thread Name Space which has over 100 nick meanings explained.

This reminds me that I should explain my nick too...

am I right that your nickname is derived from your family name?
Or even that is your *exact* family name?

        Mmm... wrong ;)

I have finally found some time to explain my nick in the Name Space node, where all explanations should belong ;)

My name, strangely enough, is Kat. And I'm a girl. But the weird thing is, it's hardly ever taken already! I guess most people just assume I'm a poor speller ;)

Update: Oh ok. It's short for Katriona. *glares at theorbtwo*

by talexb (Chancellor) on Aug 26, 2002 at 15:45 UTC
I've already explained my name in the name space node, but there's another part to the story.

As a teenager, I opened a bank account at the same branch as my Dad, and I became A BEAMISH with some account number. One day I went to take a few bucks out (I had a balance of about eight bucks at the time), and after I had the singles in my hot little hand, I asked for the balance. Five twenty-four, thirty six, the teller replied. Well, which is it, I replied, Five twenty-four or five thirty six? No, she said, you have five hundred and twenty four dollars and thirty six cents.

    Oh.

Walking back dazed to the family car, I climbed in and asked my mother why someone might have 'donated' over $500 to my account. The answer came later that week when my father discovered that the cash from the bond he'd ask the bank to sell had gone missing. My Dad's name is Andrew -- and he was also known as A BEAMISH by the bank (I also have a sister called Amanda). Yeah, his money ended up in the wrong A BEAMISH's account.

So after that I was known as T A BEAMISH by the bank. Sometimes the bulk mail people write to me as Timothy A Beamish -- and I know to chuck that item. Or if someone calls for Timothy -- I know that's a telemarketer.

When I signed up with pair Networks some time ago, the userID talex wasn't available -- but talexb was OK .. so that's what I have used since then.

And, of course, it's too much work to co-ordinate the shift key with my rapid-fire typing -- so lower case is it.

After seeing Erudil at the last YAPC, I learned he had mis-parsed my name as 'talex-b' -- that encouraged me to explain that it's 't-alex-b' on my home node.

    Boy, I'm long-winded. Comes with being left-brained, I think.

    --t. alex

This seems a good time to ask, why do most people have all lowercase names? I've been wondering this for some time now ^_^. ~lc(Adam)
      Shift key... too... far away...

         : )

        higle
I just think its more relaxing to the eye.

that's because lower case names are, on average, superior to upper case names!

ah! that's what I did wrong. i knew it was something. still, spelling Ovid with a lower-case 'o' somehow seems disrespectful to the original.

        cheers,
        ovid

join the perlmonks setiathome group or just click on the the link and check out our stats.

Good observation... I never noticed people ussually had all lower case. I wish I could answer the questions but I use the shift key when typing my tag.

      LeGo

I usually for some reason think that a username is case-insensitive. otherwise im very precise about capitals and punctuation ;-)

Lur: "But if this cape shrinks, consider your species extinct!"

All lowercase is very popular in the *nix world and everyone knows all the best perl hackers use *nix ;)

Most Unixes used to assume that if you used uppercase characters for your username that you were on an uppercase only terminal.

Checking with Linux, if I use all uppercase for the username it assumes that my terminal is uppercase only. If I start with uppercase then go to lowercase it assumes a mixed case terminal.

However, it's still a case of why bother with the shift key?

      BECAUSE SHOUTING IS IMPOLITE!
IF I WANTED TO SHOUT I WOULD HAVE CALLED MYSELF SHARK OR BARACUDA

      --

Because we program in lower case?

Because commands and files in unix are lower case?

Because if it was properly Capitalized it would be a proper name, which most usernames are not?

My username is perfect. I've been using it since 1984 when I discovered bbs's on my trs-80 model 4p. It kinda stuck, so I try to use it wherever, whenever it is appropriate. I can't say that I'm known as that in real life (not even as a nickname) due to the fact that my last name lends itself to such a handy nickname: Gagliardi --> gags.

Very funny Scotty... Now PLEASE beam down my PANTS!

While, it could have been much worse; I could have gone with something like hacker { :) j/k } I still feel that I chose my name too quickly. If I had know I'd be staying as long as I have, I would have picked something better. Too bad the perlmonk stats seem to think that lowercase 'a' comes after uppercase 'Z'.

    ==
PS. hacker is a great name, I just want to give him crap cause that's the name that I would have picked, given some time and thought.

Well, I was known as Screamer before. It wasn't taken, and was perfect, since it was what I'd gone by for 5 years at that point. I wasn't intending to give it up but eventually did for personal reasons; to avoid a repetition of the trouble involved, I chose to go by my realname, Aristotle, on here.

(kudra) Re: My username is...
by kudra (Vicar) on Aug 28, 2002 at 09:36 UTC
I had to pick the last option since my nick here is neither perfect for me nor something mistakenly chosen.

Whenever I join a new group, I pick a nick based upon how I'm feeling that day. That can be a new nick, or one of the ones I've already gone by in the last 9 years. That becomes my nick for all related activities, although I'll often have other active nicks at the same time for other groups.

At the time I started using Perl I hadn't used kudra for a while--I'd last used it as a testing character in a mud. Now it's become the nick I'm most associated with.

Re: My username is...
by hacker (Priest) on Aug 26, 2002 at 15:15 UTC
It's perfect for me, and I've had it since I was ~15, so that's 16 years of hacker.

I've had this as my email address at every company I've worked for (except the big one of course). I'm hacker at Slashdot, hacker at Advogato, hacker at every ISP I've used, hacker at apprentice.perl.org, I'm hacker at Linux Journal, my BBS 14+ years ago was called "Hacker Heaven BBS" (and my Fidonet node address was 1:320/2600, much to the dismay of the control freaks who ran other BBS' in the area), and dozens of others.

My friends call me hacker, my coworkers called me hacker, and that's what I've been used to. I tend to find solutions to things using conventional and unconventional means. I also have an extensive security history, and I've played the role of both blackhat and whitehat in different capacities. I'm still green to perl, though I do have a development background (so I'm not yet a 'japh', just a 'h').

I realize that the name, thanks to the media, seems to take on a very different meaning these days, but I hold true to the spirit of the name when I first chose it.

And here I thought you'd chosen the nick because you were an especially sloppy saber fencer. <grin>

perfect for me....I used to use the nick "harker" but then everyone thought I was a wannabe-vampire, and it became popular, hard to get, blah blah blah...

Well I used to be known as Buddha because the old joke was that even with my Mt. Dew gut, I still had the body of a god, Buddha (thank you thank you, I'm here all week!). The name stuck. Then I shaved my head and some friends called me Buzz. It was only a matter of time before the two got put together.

I explained this on the username homenode but I'll retell the story here too...

feloniousMonk is my homage to Thelonious Monk. He was one of the creators of BeBop, a new breed of jazz.

And why not just use his name? Well, when I was a child and heard his name I thought people were calling him Felonious. So it stuck with me.

My second choice was GregorMendel but tho I like genetics I'm not that fond of peas :-)

Mine is actually too long for the chatterbox (even I typo it periodically), but I voted with "Okay, but my first choice...." instead. Despite having been known as rattusillegitimus (and other, less pseudo-latinized versions) off and on for years, I still think of myself as "corwin," the first username I grabbed once upon a time when I was a young geek first discovering the Internet. I identify so strongly with that handle that I want my tombstone to read "Dear Lord, we give you Corwin. Try not to piss him off." (apologies to the writers of City Slickers).

At any rate, to make a long story short (too late), both corwin and the shorter version of my current handle (rattus) were taken, so I made do the best I could. Perhaps if this were to happen, I might pettition to have my name changed ;)

Re: My username is...
by snafu (Chaplain) on Aug 28, 2002 at 14:13 UTC
Mine is an interesting name. I chose it because I thought it was cool. That is before I found out that it actually was an acronym. Heh, and believe it or not, I don't curse, so when I learned what the name actually stood for I thought it slightly ironic.

I use the word snafu as meaning that something bad happened or that one is caught in a snafu. This is that definition of the name that appealed to me. I do not liken the name to personify myself, however. Albeit, I have had my share of snafus.

In summary, I like the word; I like what it means. I adopted it about a year ago and I've just stuck with it. Sometimes, someone might see me in IRC as SnafuX. Ok, folks, just so everyone knows, Snafu ex is how it should be pronounced. :)

I have many other names I go by. For instance,
  • NOTJames
  • # My first and most loved
  • SnafuX or Snafu
  • # My second
  • generic
  • # Another one I particularly like
  • cloaked
  • # My most favorite one.

If I could change my name here, I would change it to cloaked. Is it possible to change my name?

by gregor42 (Parson) on Aug 28, 2002 at 16:26 UTC

I actually specifically chose/designed my handle a long time ago to be as useful as possible while still reflecting some small spark of personality.

My given name is Gregory, and I when asked if I prefer Greg or Gregory I usually - just to be a pain - say 'Gregor'. Though my mother never called me by that variant. (Dad has started to recently ;-} )

The 42 is a reference to the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy ..ahem...trilogy...

And the point is that I use the same handle on ever site I go to - and usually find it wide open. Furthermore I acquired www.gregor42.com and use gregor42@mail.com so as to make me easily accessible to anyone willing to look.

Of course, now that I've ranted about this I'm forced to think of a Dennis Hopper quote from the film Search & Destroy : "Just because it happened to you, doesn't mean it's interesting."

By the time I realised it was OK to not know stuff around here I had gained some XP and written a few nodes I was kind of proud of, so even though I created this other account (muzza is an Aussie nickname for Murray, my first name) I never switched because I didn't want to give up all those nodes :) I should petition the Gods and pray they look favourably on this foolish monk...

...a tribute to all sorts of geekdom.

    WARNING: LONG-WINDED DIGRESSION AHEAD

A few years ago I was sketching out an extended scenario for a cyberpunk story. It was nicely detailed, with logical progressions of events stretching from 1998 to 2023. A devout fan of Gibson, I insisted on writing the progression of events down to minutiae. Instead of just saying "At some point in the 2010's there was a huge war in east Asia that made parts of it a wasteland" I decided that Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, two neighbouring former Soviet republics with very different cultures and religions, had some sort of enmity against one another, and I decided that they both had been used as hiding places for nuclear warheads that the Soviets had "destroyed." So the world watched in horror as, in 2004, the two nations bombarded each other, and over the next few years millions of refugees heading east displaced enough people to start up all sort of violence, and so around 2011 China started to balkanize into tiny states. Before it got really bad someone (I can't remember who, now) decided it would be a good idea to make powerful firearms and high-velocity electrochemical-propulsion ammunition easily obtainable. Then it got really bad, spread to the pacific rim, yadda yadda yadda.

Phew, sorry about that. What was I saying? Yeah, LAI stood for "Lavery Artificial Intelligence," the main villain in one particular story arc.
    Anticlimactic, I know.

I said mine was 'perfect', because I am a huge T-Bone Walker fan; my old bandmates used to razz me about it. It's been my net.name for over a decade. Of course, T-Bone Walker and I are about as similar as Bill and George Clinton ...

Still, I blame my parents. They named me after my dad's best friend, Richard, who died in Vietnam right before I was born. To name any child "Richard Burton" in 1967 was not only horribly cruel, but incredibly stupid: guess who's choosing their nursing home?

In truth, I blame it on Lyndon Johnson. If it weren't for him, my father's friend wouldn't have been there to be shot by the VC in the first place.

    Hi there.

I would have to say that my user name is absolutely perfect for me (makes sense, right?).

However, if I knew what I know now when I made the name, I would have removed the space in the middle.

Is there someone that I could appeal to to make this change? (probably not, or people would abuse it...)

I have a Name Space node to explain it. I just don't think it fits me as well as it once did (although it still does a fair job). I'd rename myself to my proper name or to another nickname of mine -- groundhog -- if I had the chance.

Some people might ask, "Why 'groundhog'?" Those who know me pretty well might remember I was born on the 2nd of February.
