Erraticate usernames with white space

It is just as obsurd to have a username with white space as it is to have one 46 characters long (45 is just fine :) You can't message someone with white space in there username, therefore, it is a usless user name that goes beyond hiding identity. That username is unreachable by the means set forth by this site and is therefore bad. It is just as bad to have white space in the username here as it is to spam or post to USENET with a fake email address. Enough said.

Too much said. (Was: RE: Erraticate usernames with white space)

Usernames such as Buckaroo Buddha are annoying, yes, in that it's difficult to msg them. But that's a minor annoyance; those who want to communicate with those people can and have found ways to do so. vroom might solve the problem by allowing users to encapsulate user names in a /msg field, so that to send a message to Buckaroo Buddha I might type /msg 'buckaroo buddha' into the text field. Even if he doesn't do that, it's only a minor problem; communications with him privately through the chatterbox are a MINOR PROBLEM. I can always ask him for an email address. And that minor problem only applies to him, in it being slightly more difficult for others to reach him, and to me and others who might wish to contact him.

Names like yours, on the other hand, are a problem for everyone, all the time. You stretch the user box out of proportion. You force scrolling on small screens. You're even MORE difficult to communicate with than Buckaroo Buddha because it's 45 characters to type into the message box. And these problems don't just affect you and whoever might want to contact you; it affects every single reader of this site.

If you'd read some documentation (second paragraph in the Chatterbox Information section), you'd have discovered that substituting an underscore for a space character will allow you to send a private message.

Your inability to discover this on your own leads me to two possible scenarios:

    • The information for new users is not as easy to find as it should be.
    • You're lazy and prone to overreaction.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and choose the former. Lots of things are apparently impossible, until you read the directions -- or ask someone more experienced for assistance.

For future information, the Perl Monks FAQ has quite a bit of user-contributed documentation. It's another good place to look for information.

    Problems with your post:

    > You can't message someone with white space in there username

Yes, you can. Replace the space with an underscore. You complain about that several times, but obviously you fail to understand how this works. Admittedly, I didn't know how it worked until I asked, but at least I didn't post a rant.

    > It is just as bad ... to post to USENET with a fake email address.

Hmmm... why would someone want to post to usenet with a fake e-mail address? To stop spambots from pulling their e-mail address out? And posting an e-mail address like ovidREMOVETHISSPAMBAITSECTIONTOEMAILME@easystreet.com is just frickin' annoying.

That's almost as annoying as i_had_a_little_trouble_so_i_came_up_with_this_and_now_defend_it_because_I_am_so_inconsiderate.

Update: Wow. This is my first flame on Perlmonks. I am being drawn to the dark side :(

i'm not attatched to my username ... if someone would
like to tell me how to remove the wuitespace i will

hell, i'd change the whole username if i knew how
i signed up for an account the first time i saw
       perlmonks ...

i didn't know that i'd like it here *grin*
i picked the first stupid thing i could think of...

Buckaroo: from "the Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
                                    in the Fifth Dimension"
Buddha: from "Da Chemical Buddha" which was my
                      username in my kR4d 3733t d00d days ;)

FWIW, I think "Buckaroo Buddha" is one of the most fitting usernames here and hope you don't change it. When I joined, all I could think of was my initials ase which, luckily has the redeeming quality of being the same when rotated 3.1415926 radians about the Z-axis.
