How about this.. my podunk town doesn't do fireworks anymore because some girl fell in a ditch last year and hurt herself. They can't afford the insurance this year.

So, I stayed home and wrote my own fire works in QBASIC on a DOS box I had in the attic :-)

QBASIC was the best thing Microsoft ever released.
        Which isn't saying much

Does this include the illegal ones that went off in the parking lot while waiting for the officially sanctioned ones?

I was really lucky...I went to an apartment roof 4th party where we could see at least four fireworks shows (Elliott Bay, Lake Union, Bellevue and Bill Gates') plus tons of illegal arial fireworks. If any of you ever find yourselves in Seattle for the 4th, watch from Wallingford!

The only fireworks I got to see were the few little fizzlers my neighbors touched off. This year was just blackpowder-less for me. Oh, I did light a couple of snakes. But it didnt make me feel any better.

Hmmm - here in Australia we have no reason to let fireworks off in early July . . . .

Ditto: I'm british and we don't have any reason for fireworks either. Any other Monks notice how many of these surveys are only relevant to people who live in the USA? (not a complaint just an observation: I thought this site was multi-national)

[ambrus]: marto: no, not that way. if you just want to test for an existing id attribute, then write *[@id] , or you can match a regexp to the value of that attribute like *[@id=~/something/ ]
[marto]: ambrus, thanks I ended up going with '//*[starts- with(@id, "thread_")]...
[ambrus]: Sometimes it's easier to just match elements in ways other than xpath, like directly with perl code.
[marto]: this is a cheap hack, a script that doesn't need to run for long, using WWW::Mechanize:: Firefox to drive some awful interface.
[marto]: if it were anything more serious I'd spend more time looking into it properly :P
