  • I didn't read this all, it's too long, me and 95% of my generation have ADD.

So do I. And trust me.. trying to write the bloody thing was like.. like..

.. like trying to write a complex piece of code.

ADD carries with it a capacity for hyperfocus.. the ability to keep plugging away, one piece at a time, for periods that regular mortals find appalling. It's what causes those 18-hour "just one more level" gaming sieges, and good programmers know how to use it to their advantage.

If you're not interested in the material, that's cool. Please don't elevate disinterest to the level of neurological function, though. If ADD made it impossible to focus on one thing for any length of time, a programmer with ADD would be like a surgeon with cerebral palsy.

  • I'm just wondering - does this belong on a Perl site? Is Perlmonks turning into long-summaries-of-basic-programming-theory monks?

Actually, this material is being written on request from other brethren. Like I say, if you don't like it, that's cool. There's no shortage of nodes here in the monastery, and I'm sure you'll find some you enjoy. We do seem to have a lot of self-taught monks romping around, though, and many have lodged petitions on the general theme of "I wish I knew more theory" at one time or another.

These nodes are for them. And they, in turn, generously indulge an old man's penchant for rambling on (*cough*, *wheeze*, *dribble*, etc). ;-)

Sorry, didn't mean to imply it wasn't interesting or of value. I was just trying to gauge the popular limit of post variety. Could have done it by rep I suppose, but I'm just an anonymous monk and can't see the rep.
