I realized as I wrote it that being shot and being borged are very different degrees. But the analogy hits the same core idea ...
We don't allow police officers to perform their duties (in some cases, this involves shooting someone) anonymously, because as a society we've decided it's too easy for that power to be abused. Other societies (or governments, actually) have allowed this .. these are called "secret police" and that certainly has NO positive connotations. Now, I'm certainly not saying that I think Perlmonks is a police state! Not at ALL. Compared to the majority of other online communities I'm aware of, Perlmonks is a haven of civility, justice, and light, and that's because of the deliberate intents, efforts, and actions of both it's members and it's "ruling party". I applaud all of them/you/us. I can come here and be educated, edified, and encouraged all at the same time. My analogy was just to illustrate the point Chip was trying to make (and failing, in some cases) by framing it in a situation that most everyone would grok.
