Ok.. breath deep.. ommmm ommmmm

Don't let the ignorance get to me.. ommmm ommmm

Oh screw it. While surfin /. and finding this. All I can say is "Where's Larry? Not to mention that the cr@p merlyns been through should have qualified him as well. However looking at the list more closely it's easy to see the frustration with the term "hacker" as discussed here.

Ahhh.. The power of meditation

*sigh*

    Ack! You have referenced my controversial thread! (which was more about a rant about growing disdain for elegance and simplicity in my organization than a thread about a desire to adjust the current language -- everyone assumed incorrectly due to some bad wording on my part).

    Ok, back on subject...

    TLC doesn't have any credibility. Both it, and the Discovery Channel, for instance, spend most of their time now showing home improvement shows. I remember when they used to show actual science programs. Ah, those were the days...hey, even TechTV isn't technical most of the time. It's all dumbed down considerably.

    Where did they go wrong in the list? The went wrong EVERYWHERE. GNU is not Unix. Nor is it Linux. It's not an operating system! Worse, they started interchanging decent contributers and destructive worthless scum!

    I really don't really worship any idols anyway, my Monastery forbids it

      I ran into an article in Scientific American a while back on CSN - CableScienceNetwork which would be modeled after C-SPAN. Anyhow figured that with your disgust at what those two channels have become you might be interested in something of the CSN nature, which IMHO would be awesome to see come to fruition.

    With a few exceptions, that list is mostly an evil hackers list, not a good hackers list.

    It's nice to know that I've met most of the people on that list though, even if Larry and I aren't on the list. {grin}

    They have my buddy Linus as working for Transmeta though. He hasn't worked there for six months or more. He's working for OSDL now, based a few miles from my home, although he's working remotely from the bay area.

    It looks like the typical "these are the {evil} hackers that made the news over the years" list that I've seen paraded out over and over. The people who have done the truly best hacks that I'm aware of aren't even close to being on there, or being in the news. They don't care that they aren't known by popular media: in fact, it's easier for them that they are avoided.

    So, don't fret. This is a self-selecting list, and has no relevance to greatness of contribution, or consequences of devastation.

    By the way, Robert "worm" Morris and I met shortly after I was sentenced, and we compared his damage to mine, and his sentence to mine. Sad. I met his dad, the NSA contractor Bob Morris, the same weekend, and that guy was a hoot. And, as a ribbing, I also asked Robert if he understood the difference between less than and greater than now, and he chuckled. (If you don't understand that, go read the descriptions of the worm and why it spread so fast.)

    Gee, no Larry, no Merlyn, no Kernighan to go with Ritchie, no Jobs to go with Woz, and to include Barlow, I just don't get it. Pretty punk list!
