But upgrading is usually the right answer, running known buggy software is just dumb.
What makes you belive that new versions of software contain less bugs than older? It's never true unless software developers first priority is reducing technical dept. And known bugs are just better than unknown
(however, I suspect there were several perl versions where bug rate is too hight. I think between 5.8.1 and 5.8.8)
that clear in the question
Of course, I was talking only about cases when I mentioned version in the question. The possible problem that it was not highlighted with big red font and put into title.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
