Thank you, ELISHEVA, for your very thoughtful responses to my (all-too-naïve) inquiry.
My only gripe with "Anonymous Monk" is that I don't know which of arbitrarily many "Anonymous Monk"s I'm conversing with when I post something on PerlMonks. That's really all there is to my question about why the decision was made by whoever runs things here to let everyone be one, amorphous, indistinct Anonymous Monk on PerlMonks.

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
