Mail::POP3Client worked better for me.
#!/usr/bin/perl -l
use strict;
use warnings;
use Mail::POP3Client;
my $host = 'pop.example.com';
my $user = 'user';
my $password = 'password';
my $pop = Mail::POP3Client->new(
HOST => $host,
USESSL => 1,
USER => $user,
PASSWORD => $password,
);
print "You have ", $pop->Count, "messages";

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
