I would use a well-known protocol such as SOAP, using the existing CPAN Perl modules that are built to do that. All of the technical issues have been taken care of, and who really cares exactly how much data-size it takes. LOL

<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
