New (rude) Activestate Perl Icon

by inman (Curate)
on Mar 24, 2004 at 09:46 UTC ( #339337=perlmeditation: print w/ replies, xml ) Need Help??

I recently upgraded to Activestate Perl 5.8.3.809. on a windows platform. I am slightly disturbed to see that the program icon appears to be in the shape of a cartoon penis. What happened to the pearls?

This is just an observation. I have a screenshot of the Perl.exe resource file to prove it. (pic)

Well let's have IT (should've started with the icon)!

MJD says "you can't just make shit up and expect the computer to know what you mean, retardo!"
    I run a Win32 PPM repository for perl 5.6.x and 5.8.x -- I take requests (README).
** The third rule of perl club is a statement of fact: pod is sexy.

The picture on my home node has been updated accordingly.
It's official, that's a-one harry beenis. I guess ActiveState is shying away from Oreillys(?) trademark and going with their own. I myself like par's icon.

If your penis looks like that, you better see a doctor.

What does it usually mean when people instantly think of a penis at any distantly similar shape?

    Jeez.

Some l*beep*etters may be considered offensive as well*beep*beep*.

Next, you'll*beep*beep* be barred from using words such as Richard*beep*beep*beep*beep*beep*beep*beep* because it is a synonym for Dick*beep*beep*beep*beep*.

    L*beep*iz

And of course, if you happen to have a name like "Richard Wack", do not become a high school teacher. (True story. Though he is the sort of person that would have reveled in this fact).

      ----
      : () { :|:& };:

Note: All code is untested, unless otherwise stated

Reminds me of a Dutch guy I used to work with, whose first name is "Cock" (no kidding, this is a real, although not very common, Dutch first name).

He decided to not use his first name in emails anymore after finding out his (personal) mail was always getting filtered as spam.

        Liz

What is about names of people in the educational system? I know of a dean who was called Richard Woodcock. (Just how many slang terms about the same thing can you put in one name?) No, I'm not kidding.

        Makeshifts last the longest.

Reminds of the time I was working my way through college at a company owned by two men named Dick and BJ. I'm sure their respective wives got a giggle out of that.

        Cheers,
        Ovid

New address of my CGI Course.

Or Harold Dick - who was a Math teacher at my High School.

Some anonymous person was kind enough, one weekend, to emblazen his door with a logo similar to Activestate's new lizard - sans hands - and the school in their infinite wisdom, instead of painting the door, sandblasted the "image" off leaving the outline.

Useless trivia: In the 2004 Las Vegas phone book there are approximately 28 pages of ads for massage, but almost 200 for lawyers.

Son, we call that a "Liberty tickler" now.

I think basically what you have here is an example of bad cropping. The full uncropped "lizard" would be much less "suggestive", but likely not fit into a 32x32 icon. Which of course is just one for reason to use Mac OS X IMO :-P

Of course, if you really wanna get picky about phallic/vulvic symbols, then you could say that the Washington Monument in Wash. D.C. is really just a "symbol" of white-male domination. And then there is the shape of George Washinton's wig on the one dollar bill. Oh, and what about the CBS "eye", i mean come on, thats clearly a vagina turned on its side. Lets not get started on anything paintings by Georgia O'Keefe. And we all know what a cigar really is (wink wink, nudge nudge say no more).

But then again, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and a lizard is just bad art direction.

      I'm getting way offtopic, but
you could say that the Washington Monument in Wash. D.C. is really just a "symbol" of white-male domination

This claim has actually been made. Last year, someone at Harvard built a snow phallus. This article in the Harvard Crimson about the sculpture (contains a picture of the sculpture, so may not be worksafe), interviews, among other people, a Women’s Studies lecturer.

She said the snow penis follows a long line of public phallic symbols, including the Washington Monument and missiles.

Once it's Turing complete, everything else is just syntactic sugar.

When I installed ActiveState Perl 5.8.3.809 their icon looked more like a mushroom to me (gray color and all).

In windows icons are usually resources in a dll. I believe if you have the right tools you can alter the resource section of a dll if you find it truly offensive.

      As the OP says above,

It doesn't look much like a lizard when viewed as 32x32 icon sent as part of an e-mail to your boss!!
so the problem might be getting the modified binary to the boss's home machine.

Suggestive? you clearly haven't used the old Nesticle NES (Nintendo for those that live in a box) emulator then. Those who played it will know there was no suggestion needed in the icon (ballz!) -- I actually changed the icon to a nice beach ball so I could use the program in front of the parental units without having to comment on 'why is that on your computer'. Alas, such creativity is rarely seen in software these days. But maybe that's a good thing.

That's funny... I have quite the dirty mind and I never really looked twice at the icon for Nesticle/Nester... I originally thought it was just a screaming emoticon. Thanks a lot for pointing out the NES porn icon. LMAO.

I don't think I've ever heard of a penis that has hands...

Man, do you have an Active(state) imagination. I guess I can see how you got that out of the icon, but I don't think I would ever have seen it unless you had said something. I agree with comments made by Abigail-II and jdavidboyd.
